Example: Material thickness monitor

Project
An electronic component manufacturer had a need to measure the thickness of ceramic sheet material at two points across its width in a continuous production operation. The required resolution and accuracy is 0.00001 in. and continuous real-time SPC is required.

Result
The thickness measurements are made using a dual-head non-contact laser displacement sensor made by Keyence Corporation, which continuously scans the material. The measurements are acquired and analyzed by custom software and are continuously shown on screen and logged to a disk file.

Designed for ease of use by line operators, the software provides instant feedback of proper thickness. X-bar and Range charts update automatically as the material is measured, and SPC alarm conditions are clearly indicated.

All data is saved to a disk file for later review and analysis, and a printed traveler for the production run includes overall statistics and SPC charts.
